Black Gold - Mary Pleasant
$35.99
“Black City Hall” was an abolitionist, chef, millionaire investor and San Francisco entrepreneur who helped transport slaves on the Underground Railroad during the gold rush. She got her nickname by helping escaped slaves gain employment in San Francisco after their escape.
Pleasant passed for white before slavery was abolished in order to gain status and build wealth in San Francisco. After the Civil War ended she declared her race as Black.
After that declaration and filing several lawsuits fighting discrimination, she lost her wealth, her reputation was damaged and she never recovered her standing in the community.
Her legacy was lost to the history books until the late 20th century.
