Slavery had a devastating and long term impact on Africans of the diaspora. Contrary to the beliefs of some naysayers, the negative effects of slavery still have a compounding impact today. After emancipation former slavers worked hard to ensure that freedmen couldn't earn an independent living for themselves and build generational wealth.
