Black Gold - Ida Bell Wells
$35.99
Ida Bell Wells-Barnett was an educator, journalist, editor, publisher, activist, founding member of the NAACP, Black Feminist, and an anti-lynching crusader.
During her work on anti-lynching she published pamphlets describing the impact and reasons for lynching and traveled to Europe to garner attention for the plight of Black Americans being lynched. In response to her activism her newspaper was burned to the ground and there were attempts by the US press to discredit her.
During the Woman Suffrage Procession of 1913 Wells-Barnett refused to march at the back of the line. In 1930 she ran for the Illinois State Legislature. She did not win, but she was one of the first Black women to run for office in the United States.
Ida Bell Wells-Barnett fought for her life and for the quality of life for Blacks of her time and in the future and that's why she is our Black Gold.
