Given the title "Mother of the Blues" Ma Rainey began performing at an early age and earned enough money from her Paramount recordings and touring with the Wildcats Jazz Band to retire to Georgia, buy a house and open two theaters. She was one of the earliest musicians to include LGBT content in her songs.
