Robert Smalls escaped slavery by piloting the CSS Planter into Union territory. He was later made captain of the ship, recommissioned the USS Planter, while under fire by the Confederates.
He went on to become an entrepreneur who owned a newspaper and co-owned a majority black owned railway line.
During the period of Reconstruction, he had political aspirations and held seats in the South Carolina House of Representatives and later the Senate. He went on to hold a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
